During the past months, while schools have been closed due to covid-19, Oasis Africa have been able to distribute two rounds of care packages to the families of the students. As the pandemic crisis continues in Kenya, many of the families who are connected to the Oasis Africa program have lost their casual jobs and/or have seen the business that they run or work for collapse. Most families are eating only 1 or 2 meals per day to stretch the funds they do have.
Furthermore, the Kenyan government has just announced that High Schools will not be re-opening again in 2020. This is going to have a significant impact on families and students alike. University students will most likely not return in 2020 for face to face classes and if feasible, commence online learning. To make this possible, Oasis Africa need to assess how many University students require a laptop to enable them to continue in their studies. An average laptop can be purchased for 25,000 Kenyan Shillings (approx. $250).
